Today at Emporella we are feeling patriotic, not only because today is the Queens official birthday and Prince Phillip’s birthday. We are proud to be British so we thought that we’d take a trip down memory lane to 1947.
Is the date that Princess Elizabeth married Prince Phillip at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, with Elizabeth aged just 21 and Phillip aged 26. The royal wedding was in front of 2,000 invited guests. The ceremony was broadcast on radio, to 200 million listeners worldwide.
Princess Elizabeth was accompanied by her eight bridesmaids: HRH The Princess Margaret (her younger sister), HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent (her first cousin), Lady Caroline Montagu-Douglas-Scott (daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch), Lady Mary Cambridge (her second cousin), Lady Elizabeth Lambart (daughter of the Earl of Cavan), The Hon. Pamela Mountbatten (Philip’s first cousin), The Hon. Margaret Elphinstone (her first cousin) and The Hon. Diana Bowes-Lyon (her first cousin). Her cousins Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent served as page boys. How adorable are their little outfits, the kilts are amazing! We love the bridesmaids’ dresses, they are so beautiful and perfectly complimented with the flower crowns.
We love these traditional balcony shots just after the ceremony, seeing the Queen doing her famous wave and looking joyous and regal. These were taken at their home Buckingham Palace overlooking a huge crowd of supporters.
The wedding was a royal event held following the end of the Second World War. The dress, designed by the Court Designer, had a star lily and orange blossom patterned bridal train that was 13 feet (4.0 m) in length. The train, symbolic of rebirth and growth after the war. The material used was ivory silk decorated with crystals and 10,000 seed pearls, imported from the United States of America. Elizabeth also wore a diamond fringe tiara which secured her veil.
The dress was designed by Norman Hartnell, who had been Court Designer since 1938 and who was the designer of the dress, claimed it as “the most beautiful dress I had so far made”.
Fact: Princess Elizabeth had to use clothing ration coupons to pay for her dress due to the austerity measures following the war.
The official cake was prepared by the kingdom’s finest pastry artists, the cake stood 2.7 meters high and included a Tudor rose crown. The cake weighed 227 kilos. Its four tiers were coated with a white sugar glaze, decorated with ornamental columns, cupids and symbols of the two noble houses. Amazing! Wish you could give it a try?
A slice of this 70 year old cake was sold at an auction for over £500 . The fruit cake, still wrapped in its original baking parchment, was one of the portions given to guests following the marriage of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947. It comes with its original ivory-coloured box decorated with a silver E and P and the words “Buckingham Palace 20th November 1947”, as well as a small card inscribed “With the best wishes of their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Duke of Edinburgh”. The slice, which is still edible thanks to its high alcohol content, was bought by an unnamed bidder from Los Angeles.
